DEVELOPMENT OF THE WEEK: Hawthorn Park
Craftsman-style houses blend with intown community
When
the construction crews move out of Hawthorn Park, there will be only an
entrance sign to distinguish the new development's 47 houses from the rest of
the surrounding neighborhood. And that's just what made Christian Stark
enthusiastic about buying a house there.
Anchored between
Lanes Lane and Murray Hill Avenue in Kirkwood, an established community on
Atlanta's east side, Stark discovered an enclave of classic Craftsman-style
houses that blend with the style of Kirkwood's cottages and bungalows with
their front porches, brick posts and pastel colors.
"They've
kept the architectural integrity of the outsides and updated the insides,"
said Stark. "They've used numerous building materials on the elevations
for that Craftsman-style look. And the interior plans are fantastic."
Later this week,
Stark will move into a 2,100-square-foot two-story home with a front porch
topped by a sleeping porch off the upstairs master bedrooms. The plan has two more
bedrooms, a basement-level garage, formal living and dining rooms and a family
room.
"I was
trying to find something in the $300,000s intown because I work in Henry County
and wanted to always have a reverse commute," Stark said. "But I was
coming up short on the square footage and the bedrooms I needed. This house fit
perfectly."
Hawthorn Park's
one- and two-story houses sit on less than one-quarter acre lots with
rear-entry garages. Priced from $299,900 to $420,900, the houses have between
2,000 and 3,000 square feet and three to five bedrooms. Formal living rooms
have brick-fronted fireplaces with mantels, flanked by two small square
windows. Room dividers of glass-fronted bookcases lead to the dining room and
kitchens with breakfast areas and decks or patios. Hardwood floors and 10-foot
ceilings throughout the first floor are standard. Each home also has a one- or
two-car garage, including some that are detached with bonus areas atop the
parking spaces.
The contemporary touches inside include coffered, tray and vaulted
ceilings; glass block windows; solid-surface counters and sleek appliances;
upstairs laundry areas; and elegant master baths with garden tubs, separate
showers and walk-in closets.
