Cobb County's plans call for nine new schools by 2008 By Jon Gillooly Marietta Daily Journal Staff Writer Cobb has enough new students to fill four new schools opening in the fall and nine new schools in the next three years - despite a population growth that has slowed significantly during the past decade. Four new schools are scheduled to open this August. Another three will open in fall 2006 and two will open by 2008. Construction of each of the new schools is being funded by the county's 1-percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for education. Cobb voters approved the establishment of the special tax - which funds the construction of new schools, the renovation and expansion of existing schools, the purchase of technology and the payment of debt - in September 2003. The growing number of new schools comes even though many areas of Cobb are considered "built out," and student growth in the county school district has slowed from about 3,000 a year in 2000 to about 1,500 a year now. But the rapid growth of the past decade means that many schools remain overcrowded and students in many locations have been relegated to trailer classrooms. And some areas of west and northwest Cobb near Kennesaw and Acworth are quickly filling up with new subdivisions populated by young children ready to enter school. The four new schools slated to open in August include McCall Primary School, located on six acres at 4496 Dixie Avenue in Acworth. The school will have a capacity of 500 students in kindergarten through second-grade and cost $8,748,000. Riverside Primary School is located on nine acres at 461 S. Gordon in Mableton. The school will have a capacity of 500 students in kindergarten through second-grade and cost $7,148,000. Barber Middle School will be located on 40 acres at 4222 Cantrell Road in Acworth. It will have a capacity of 1175 students in sixth through eighth-grade and cost $13,388,000. Austell Primary School, located on 12 acres at 5600 Mulberry Street in Austell, will have a capacity of 500 students in kindergarten through second-grade. The school cost $7,202,000. The prices are for construction of the school and do not include the purchase of the land. Schools scheduled to open in 2006 are Hillgrove High School, located on 95 acres at 4165 Luther Ward Road in Powder Springs, with a capacity of 1,950 students for a cost of $32,375,000; Lovinggood Middle School, located on 27 acres at 3825 Luther Ward Road in Powder Springs, with a capacity of 1,175 students for a cost of $14,768,020; and McClure Middle School, located on 58 acres at 3,660 Old Stilesboro Road in Kennesaw, with a capacity of 1,175 students for a cost of $18,051,000. Dr. Bradford said the school district is currently in the process of obtaining land for a high school and elementary school in far northwest Cobb near the Paulding County line. The schools are scheduled to open by 2008. Before the current round of school construction, 12 schools were built with funds from the county's previous SPLOST, passed in 1998. "SPLOST is an incredible program," she said. "You build as you go and don't have to raise property taxes to reduce debt. This makes Cobb County what it is."
