Unfortunately, Bradford's first two statements show an apparent lack of understanding of demographics and trends for Smyrna, Vinings and East Cobb.
In Oakdale alone, there have been over 1500 new housing units approved and under construction in the past year, more than doubling the population of our area. While there are not large tracts of open land, this growth has come from redevelopment of existing neighborhoods.
In July, there are three pending redevelopment zonings for nearly 40 acres in Oakdale, for 166 new homes. In addition, there are plans to tear down a complex of one bedroom apartments and replace it with multi-bedroom construction.
Dr. Bradford had to have been aware of the 50-acre tract at !-285 and Atlanta Road, approved with 970 residential units, because the county school board provided access to the project through one of Cobb County's schools.
The Cumberland area is obviously facing continued high rise development and East Cobb is also growing through redevelopment.
With Bradford's apparent misconception of growth patterns and demographics (and perceived problems with approval of another school SPLOST), these three areas appear to have little chance of any new schools in the foreseeable future.
Teasley Elementary (Vinings area) will have to be split into K-2 and 3-5 in the very near future because it has run out of room for trailers. We have been told by our local school board member that our area is not scheduled for any new schools for the next ten years.
Of the eight schools scheduled for opening between now and 2008, one is in Mableton, one is in Austell, two are in Acworth, one is in Kennesaw and three are in West Cobb.
In my school district there has been only one new school built since 1959, and it was a replacement for an existing school. Quotes in the Monday MDJ attributed to Dr. Diane Bradford,
